Belonging, independence, and self-expression built through relationships and partnerships.
Tzammarot is the first inclusive high school in Israel, and in the 2023-2024 school year, a new building was inaugurated for it. With the goal of involving students in turning the new structure into a familiar, "homey" space, and out of a desire to give them the opportunity to independently leave their personal mark on their new environment, the school’s space design coordinator—accompanied by a mentor from Inclu—established the Design Team.
Twelve students from all grades chose to join the team and take responsibility for their space: planning and designing it so that everyone feels a sense of belonging and "at home."
The students divided the work through collaboration, taking on leadership roles and responsibilities. In doing so, they brought the group's strengths and diversity to light: some contributed a developed imagination and creativity to produce original ideas, while others used their talented hands to turn those ideas into reality.
The team members do not only express their ability to act independently; they also realize the concept that independence is woven from social connections and fruitful partnerships. This is the embodiment of independence and partnership in inclusive education at its best—receiving the opportunity to express initiative, take responsibility, and influence the environment while collaborating and creating a place for everyone. This is how true self-influence, competence, and the confidence to share and participate are born.
